The Legal Reality

Under the Package Travel and Linked Travel Arrangements Regulations 2018, if you combine accommodation with any additional service like your yoga programme, transfers, or activities you are legally a "Package Organiser".

The regulations require you to hold statutory financial protection (such as a regulated trust), provide pre contract information, and guarantee guest refunds and repatriation. From 6 April 2027, the 2026 Amendment Regulations tighten this further with new 14 day supplier redress rules and a full removal of the Linked Travel Arrangements loophole.

FAQ's

Do I need ATOL or ABTA to host a yoga retreat in the UK?

Only if you sell flights as part of the package do you need ATOL. ABTA is a trade-association bonding scheme that is optional but reassuring to guests. For most retreats that combine accommodation with activities, the Package Travel and Linked Travel Arrangements Regulations 2018 still apply — meaning you (or your retreat operator partner) must provide statutory financial protection for guest money. ActiveXplore is PTS-bonded, which satisfies the Regulations for retreats hosted through us, so the teacher does not need their own ATOL or ABTA membership.

How is guest money protected when I host with ActiveXplore?

All guest payments are held in a regulated trust account by Protected Trust Services (PTS) until the retreat is delivered and every supplier has been paid. ActiveXplore never uses host or guest money as cash flow. This satisfies the financial protection requirement of the Package Travel and Linked Travel Arrangements Regulations 2018.

What does ActiveXplore charge to host a retreat?

Nothing upfront. No monthly fees. No invoices before the retreat runs. ActiveXplore only gets paid once the retreat is delivered and the trust releases funds — an agreed percentage of the retreat revenue, agreed in your consultation. The only optional payment before delivery is an accommodation deposit if the venue requires one.

When do I get paid as a retreat host?

After the retreat is delivered and PTS releases the trust funds, we pay you your agreed share of the retreat revenue based on the number of spaces sold.
